Knowledge Translation (is essential)
Our garden brought together ideas from right across the breathlessness “system” and was based on principles and practices investigated by Kate during her PhD at Hull York Medical School.
Recently she gave a presentation at the Allam Lecture at HYMS winning a prize for her lecture about Participatory Design and Knowledge Translation in Breathlessness.
The key point is that doing the Breathing Space garden at Chelsea and rebuilding it in Rotherham has shown us that it is important to get knowledge out into the world about breathlessness as a hidden but common disability (acute breathlessness is one of the leading causes of unplanned visits to hospital - it is costly to the system and terrifying for the sufferer) but also to share that we can and should - as a society - be taking breathlessness and its amelioration seriously.
Our vision is to build a network of Breathing Space Gardens in the coming years - working with respiratory units, civic and public health partners, national and local business and the third sector.
Do have a look at Kate’s slides and her article in The Lancet - A love letter to breath.
