The cARBON NEUTRAL CONCRETE

To Getjar, the fabricators of our carbon-neutral concrete. Developed in collaboration with our sustainable engineers and Tarmac, this innovative mix combines oyster shells, ACLA biochar aggregate, and calcined clay to create a world-first solution designed for mass use

Exploring textures

We aim to present a rich variety of textures throughout the garden, from the charred Shou Sugi Ban timber boundary and the ‘coal dust’ sculpture plinth, to the layered interplay of planting.

The ACLA biochar has provided an opportunity to express multiple finishes within the concrete elements. These range from the elegantly smooth surface of the main platform to a more organic, textured pathway sett—introducing both visual interest and improved slip resistance.

At the canopy roof edge, we introduce a further finish: a polished exposed aggregate, where the ACLA is clearly revealed, adding depth and material legibility to the overall composition

Exposed ACLA

Below, the formation shuttering for our modular terrace takes shape. Fingers and toes crossed the measurements are spot on, as the BBC are filming the garden as part of the build.
