Charred Boundary
Our first task on site was to construct our boundary. Made from sustainably sourced charred timber, this will be re-used at our relocation site at Rotherham Breathing Space to form a new potting shed/tea hut.
Leaning into the Japanese aesthetic, shou sugi ban is a non-chemical method of preserving timber, providing a simple strong backdrop to our predominantly green planting palette.
We’ve created an elegant 3D boundary using 2 different board finishes; One heavily charred, one smoother for the recess.
The pattern of 6/4 is based on a ‘rectangular breathing’ rhythm where the exhalation is longer than the inhalation - an evidenced technique used to support people living with breathlessness to improve breathing efficiency and reduce anxiety.
The recesses catch the ever-moving arc of the sun; in the evening, these recesses are to be softly up-lit creating further shadow play.
Simple, bold … uncluttered!
