Breathe
Behind our Breathing Space garden for Asthma + Lung UK sits a body of scientific research and clinical practice showing that for many people with lung conditions, “just breathing” is anything but simple. From childhood asthma to later-life lung and heart disease, breathlessness can bring tension, anxiety and isolation, constricting people’s ability to thrive.
Introducing Kate (my partner) — a singer, music and yoga therapist, and now project manager for our Chelsea garden. For over 20 years she’s worked with people living with breathlessness in respiratory and palliative care, work which underpins her PhD at Hull York Medical School, which explores why breathlessness-related distress is so difficult to manage, and how mind–body practices such as mindfulness, yoga and tai chi can help.
Our garden at RHS Chelsea 2026, highlights the way in which gentle, mindful movement in calm green spaces can improve breath health and wellbeing. After Chelsea, the garden will be permanently relocated to Breathing Space Rotherham, extending rehabilitation outdoors for people with lung conditions from across Yorkshire.
Look out for meditation, tai chi and yoga on the Breathing Space platform during Chelsea week, with free breath tips and breathing practices from Kate on our leaflets and website.
