At the edge of a garden in Argentina, Agustín Berzero crafts a concrete atelier where architecture meets utility, stripping space to its essentials for a practice of pure focus and form.

This isn’t merely an artist’s studio; it’s a controlled spatial gesture—an act of anarchitecture (identifies something, or someplace, that we know and often enter but can't describe without such a suggestive name), where absence becomes form, and the utilitarian transforms into something almost monastic. Detached from the main house and composed in two geometrically clear volumes, the project establishes a boundary not just from the home, but from any notion of conventional comfort.

For centuries, Japanese master carpenters have developed tools and techniques informed by the extraordinary qualities of wood. They create structures of beauty and complexity – from exquisite joinery to robust architecture that withstands wind, snow and earthquakes.

Currently exhibiting at Japan House London, The Craft of Carpentry celebrates the tools and craftsmanship behind Japan’s temples and shrines. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a life-size reconstruction of the Sa-an teahouse in the temple Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience the intimate elegance of teahouse architecture.

Try This For Size

Tucked between the South Downs and the saltings of the natural Chichester Harbour is a wildflower meadow, replete with four acres of woodland, a lake, chalk stream and suite of big barns.

Nearby, a woman with limbs of branch and root stands espaliered against a wall of corrugated dark brown metal. Outsized concrete structures that bring to mind cordyceps fruiting bodies or misshapen mud dauber hives have taken root in the tall grass. A trio of bronze girls with hats for faces dance on paving bricks. This is the creation of sculptors Andrew Sabin and Laura Ford – a walk-in wunderkammer that combines a sculpture garden, a gallery, an art storage facility and a live-work studio space.

Omved Gardens, the little hidden oasis in Highgate, has been given a rethink. Relaunching this month, the community hub, beloved neighbourhood staple and green architectural garden, unveils a series of new spaces, activities and ideas for its users. It also opens a solo exhibition by artist Vivienne Schadinsky, who, through her work, celebrates the journey of seeds – from ground to harvest and beyond. The aim is to grow and become 'the UK’s first centre for food, ecology and creativity.’
