Granular Chelsea: It’s Began

We are now on site and our first task on site was to construct our boundary. Made from sustainably sourced charred timber, this will be re-used at our relocation site at Rotherham Breathing Space to form a new potting shed/tea hut.

Leaning into the Japanese aesthetic, shou sugi ban is a non-chemical method of preserving timber, providing a simple strong backdrop to our predominantly green planting palette. We’ve created an elegant 3D boundary using 2 different board finishes; One heavily charred, one smoother for the recess. The pattern of 6/4 is based on a ‘rectangular breathing’ rhythm where the exhalation is longer than the inhalation - an evidenced technique used to support people living with breathlessness to improve breathing efficiency and reduce anxiety.

Kehai House

On the outskirts of Morelia, Michoacán, HW Studio builds Kehai House, its founder Rogelio Vallejo Bores' own residence organised around a stone garden rather than a room.

Seen from the street, the house reads as a quiet white box set against a raw board-formed concrete retaining wall, the pine grain of the shuttering still printed across its surface. Black volcanic rock spills along the base, a young tree rises out of it, and a single small opening punctures the cream render. There is almost no glass. Three windows, no more, and each frames a specific thing: a mountain, a neighbouring pine, the tree that grows at the centre of the plan. Everything else turns inward.

An Architects Family Home

On a street lined with towering Victorian villas, a modest terrace of six semi-detached 1930s houses quietly interrupts the prevailing grandeur.

It was this unassuming row of pebble-dashed homes in north London that first caught the attention of Jody O’Sullivan and Amalia Skoufoglou, founders of architectural practice O’Sullivan Skoufoglou. The purchase, however, was not without its complications. The original property was withdrawn from the market at the last minute. Yet, in a turn of good fortune, the neighbouring house became available just a week later. The house they secured proved to be an even greater find. Largely untouched, it retained a wealth of original features.

The House of Four Ecologies

The House of Four Ecologies is a 1,600-square-foot residence located at The Sea Ranch, conceived by a small group of longtime friends. The collective nature of the house necessitated a layout that allows for socialising, but also solitude for individual reflection and creative craft.

Hence, the new home is imagined as an interconnected cluster of volumes, each holding space for privacy as well as gathering. "A grove of three windblown Douglas firs dominates the centre of the site, and to heed Anna and Lawrence Halprin’s dictum, the architecture dances lightly in-between them, paying deference to their residency, taking advantage of their presence to protect from wind and frame view corridors to scenery afar. And by positioning the house around the firs, the house can only be partially glimpsed as it appears and disappears between them.
