A year in the making, and several more years in the planning, the first of many Niwaki Field Reports has arrived and contains 108 pages of original writing and photography. Niwaki realised that in the pursuit of fine gardening tools and accessories they were regularly coming into contact with interesting gardeners, extraordinary gardens and all the people, places and pastimes that orbit these.

Located in the heart of Tokyo, the building challenges conventional spatial logic with its design of floating concrete slabs and glass walls. Rising vertically within an extremely narrow 8 x 4 meter plot, Nishizawa transforms a cramped and shadowed site into an open, light-filled environment, creating a sanctuary amid the surrounding high-rises.

Oudolf Transforms Glasshouse Landscape Borders

Iconic designer Piet Oudolf has radically redesigned the Glasshouse Landscape borders he first created for RHS Garden Wisley 20 years ago

An area totalling just under two acres has been redeveloped in Piet’s signature ‘New Perennial’ style, with meandering hillside paths that will lead visitors through the new landscape among bold drifts of herbaceous perennials and grasses, while retaining much-loved views of RHS Wisley’s Glasshouse.

Rachel Dein makes plaster casts of plants and flowers which record all their texture, pattern, and delicacy in fine detail.

Whether in small tiles with a single flower portrait, or large panels that suggest an entire garden full of blooms, her botanical castings reflect her desire to capture the ephemeral. They track the progress of the seasons, marking the plants at the moment when they are most alive. Like a fossil of long forgotten plants, each plaque is a ghostly vestige of time, an act of remembering: a summer day in the garden, a perfect magnolia at its peak, or the first daffodils of Spring.
