The House That Tom Built

Tom Raffield is one of a new generation of designers and makers, using his steam bending craft in innovative and contemporary ways.

In 2016 co-founders Tom and Danielle, set out to create a unique self-build in South Cornwall that would take steam bending to new heights. Documented in Channel 4’s Grand Designs and channelling the essence of the iconic Tom Raffield ethos and design aesthetic, they embarked on a monumental project that would prove to be very challenging, pushing the boundaries of contemporary architecture to their limits.

Barcelona Pavilion

One of the earliest modernist images I was presented with in my Inchbald school of design studies 20 years ago was the Barcelona Pavilion. Its rigour and clarity awakened something within me that has fed my intuitive search for purity within a landscape ever since.

Thus on a short visit to see our daughter in Barcelona, a highlight was a visit to the “German” Pavilion designed by Ludwig Mies lander Rohe and Lilly Reich in 1929. A small, perfectly formed Modernist jewel, nestled elegantly at the bottom of Montjuic Hill which was the site of the 1929 International Exposition (for which the Pavilion was commissioned). Then up to the Joan Miró Foundation at the top of the hill for a feast of Picasso and Miro’s art and to learn about their long friendship and collaborations. Hola!

Jam Jar Edit

JamJar Edit is the sister company to floral design studio JamJar Flowers. Both studios are based in Peacock Yard – a charming Dickensian craft makers yard in South London.

After receiving a commission from British fashion label Mulberry to press flowers for their SS/15 fashion show, we became fascinated with this traditional craft. The Edit studio now specialises in creating pressed flower artworks, from single stem framed pieces, to ambitious installations, private commissions and exhibitions.

Woven

Architecture practice Giles Miller Studio celebrates the completion of Woven.

Breaking down barriers between indoor and outdoor space, the dwelling is recognised at once by its unique facade of intricate steel latticework designed to integrate with the natural surroundings, inviting nature to flourish both outside and within its walls. The external skin of Woven house takes shape as a detailed, functional artwork. Its intricate latticework is created as a new home for climbing plants such as jasmine and clematis. Thus, nature is encouraged to gracefully extend its reach from the outside to the interior of the building, made possible by the generous use of glass throughout.

The Cart House

With a minimalist but bold design we created a beautiful gathering space around a new swimming pool for a professional couple’s weekend retreat from London. Planting is kept wild and contrasting in form to the designed elements with prairie and wildflower meadow feathering into the landscape beyond.
