This Allotment: Stories of Growing, Eating and Nurturing

This storytelling event, part of the Chelsea History Festival at Chelsea Physic Garden, celebrates allotment life and its many benefits with talks from twelve speakers: gardeners, food writers, novelists, horticulturalists, and historians.

The evening (Friday 27 September 2024) which will trace the history of communal gardening with personal tales of growing, eating and nurturing, is hosted by editor and publisher Sarah Rigby, who grows an allotment herself and volunteers at an organic food growing co-op, Organic Lea.

Each building points its most glass-laden facade southward, to drink in as much of the daylight as possible. Raw, eager cuts of lumber perch in the vast woodshed, wearing handwritten notes suggesting their ideal future homes. It’s no coincidence that this precision reflects that of the estate’s greatest idol: the tree. You can marvel at what George Nakashima has left behind, just as you can marvel at a full-grown tree and wonder how such a thing could have possibly come into being.

Fujigoke: A Little Zen

Just at the base of Mt.Fuji is a special farm run by the craftsmen at Fujigoke.

Here they grow and prepare high quality moss used for temples and traditional gardens in Japan. They carefully inspect the moss, taking out any impurities, later spraying a special liquid agent made from a natural material and freezing the moss to -35 degrees C, slowly drying it to keep its natural texture and beauty intact.

Sarah Rayner

Sarah Rayner lives and works in Wootha, Gubbi Gubbi country, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland.

As an artist she predominately works sculpturally creating collections of porcelain objects, underpinned by an interest in plant reproduction and the aesthetics of museology. The fragility and delicate balance of the natural world in the face of human impact are overriding and recurring themes within Sarah’s practice.
