Granular Chelsea: The Boulders

And so to Cadeby quarry in Yorkshire; a quarry close to our final Rotherham garden rebuild with a view to sourcing 3 or 4 feature sandstones to embody the gnarled ‘existing landscape’ narrative of our Chelsea garden.

Measuring over 2m in some cases, these pieces have an aged patina to them. In their raw state they exhibit strong red/ lilac hints which soften with age. These will associate tonally with our ‘Abstracted Lung’ sculpture' and offer a welcome gritty edge to our colour palette. One will be positioned as a perch bench, the others will rest in conversation with one of our character Pine trees, beneath which additional exposed rubble forms the local mulch.

A Potter’s Studio

In the rear garden of a Victorian house in North West London, Piercy&Company sinks a timber-lined pottery studio 600mm into the ground — capped with a circular oculus that fills the room with the particular quality of light that clay seems to require.

An 18-square-metre building is barely a room. But rooms built for specific practices have a way of enlarging themselves through use. The circular oculus at the apex of the gabled ceiling is the spatial event around which everything else organises. Through it, the tree canopy above the garden becomes the room's view: a framed circle of branches and sky that changes with the seasons and the light, anchoring the studio's contemplative atmosphere without requiring a window in a direction that would compromise the conservation area's visual continuity.
