In the cool embrace of Karuizawa’s verdant landscape lies a museum that feels less built and more discovered, where nature and architecture converge to create a seamless experience. Vast glass facades dissolve the division between interior and exterior, allowing sunlight to cascade into the galleries, shifting with the time of day and season. The materials are understated, allowing the surrounding forest to take center stage. Pale concrete and glass, accented by touches of wood, feel like an extension of the landscape rather than an intervention in it.

Ardoch by Moxon Architects

This video, produced by Jim Stephenson, features the Ardoch residence in Aberdeenshire by locally-based studio Moxon Architects, which has been shortlisted for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.

The video forms part of a series being published by Dezeen in collaboration with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) to highlight the award's five-strong 2024 shortlist. In the video, viewers are introduced to the hillside farmstead, which was renovated and restored from a state of disrepair to encompass a home, studio and orangery built using "Scottish craftsmanship and local tradespeople".

Winter Flowers Week

For the second year in a row, The Garden Museum will host a week-long celebration of seasonal flowers and foliage, transforming its space into an immersive winter wonderland.

Featuring captivating floral installations by Frida Kim, Harriet Parry, JamJar Flowers, Sophie Powell, and Wagner Kreusch, the event spotlights sustainable floristry through the exclusive use of sustainably sourced, British-grown flowers. This year’s contributors bring a rich blend of inspirations: Frida draws from the unspoiled Korean countryside where she grew up, while Harriet expresses her passion for art, fashion, and film.

Winter Flowers Week is on at The Garden Museum from December 5 – 9.

We have been commissioned to reimagine a heavily shaded garden; rethinking access points to the house, which currently dominate the garden. Encouraged by the clients to embrace a bold aesthetic, we have developed a scheme that creates privacy, maximises the access to sunlight, and with Yoga high on the list of priorities, created a route to a floating timber deck for mindful practice.

Accompanying a home of exceptional architectural significance this site features breathtaking views. The location holds significant heritage value, as it is part of a registered park and garden, adjacent to a Grade II* listed property. Feature plants will include Pinus mugo, Miscanthus Yakushima Dwarf, Pennisetum macrourum, Meum athamanticum and Digitalis laevigata.
