The Garden House

Architect Tsuyoshi Tane provides a peek behind the scenes and explains the development of the recently constructed Tane Garden House on the Vitra Campus.

With a footprint of barely 15 square metres, the house combines a rooftop viewing platform for Campus visitors and a meeting room for the gardeners who tend the grounds. Tsuyoshi Tane understood that this project was small in scale, but large in meaning. This is reflected in the Japanese architect’s unique design approach, which is based on an intensive research process that explores the local context in order to utilize traditional handicrafts as well as regional resources. The result is a contemporary building that strives to minimize its ecological footprint within the local conditions.

The concept (as the title suggests) is a play on The Shipping Forecast, which needs no introduction.

For nearly a century on the BBC, this broadcast of weather reports and forecasts for the seas around the British Isles has been delivered four times a day on BBC Radio 4. The Sleeping Forecast features a soothing blend of classical and ambient music interspersed with excerpts of the iconic Shipping Forecast from Radio 4.

The Mindful Meadow

Chirk Castle has created a Mindful Meadow, working in partnership with local groups to contribute to its design and creation.

The meadow is located on the National Trust Chirk Castle estate, close to the kitchen garden with a fantastic view down the Ceriog Valley. It includes a willow dome, wildflowers, seating, hedgerows and a small orchard - all designed to enhance the space for both wildlife and people. The mindful meadow is designed to provide a number of inspirational and reflective spaces, where you can connect to nature in whatever way bests suit you.

Something Old, Something New

Within the Registered Park and Gardens of a Manor house in the the south of England, we are working on a proposal with MAW Architects to reimagine a derelict walled garden as a private residence and garden of exceptional quality for a Para 80 planning application.

In partnership with Historic England we have developed a proposal for pre planning that restores existing key elements and leans heavily on archive photographic evidence for its design ethos.
